When riding a motorcycle you need to ensure you are wearing the correct equipment, this is because unlike in a car where you have a metal shell protecting you don’t have anything apart from the clothing you wear to protect you if you were to crash. The equipment you wear is very important for your safety and also for laws for riding on the roads, some of the essential equipment is:
Helmet – In most countries it is illegal not to wear a helmet whilst riding on the road. As your head is one of the most important parts of your body it makes sense that you want it to be as protected as you can possibly make it. There are variations in the size of helmets from brand to brand making sure you have the right size helmet is one of the most important things when buying a new one, this is because how it fits affects how it performs in an accident. If you go into a shop that specialises in motorcycle equipment then the people in store should be able to advise on the right size of helmet for you.- Gloves and boots – These are valuable pieces of equipment because your hands and feet would be easily damaged in an accident. The boots that you wear should go half way up your calf at least this is because you need to have sufficient protection for your ankles. With your gloves it is the fit that counts you need to ensure they fit comfortable around your palms and wrists but are slightly longer than your fingers in length this is because you need enough room for your fingers to move freely. Again the people in store should be able to advise you on the correct size.
Jacket – Wearing the right kind of jacket when riding your motorcycle is probably nearly as important as you wearing a helmet, this is because the jackets have protective armour in the back panel that can protect your spine and back from harm when in an accident. As with the other equipment there are different standards of protection for example you can get jackets that are made of material with plates in the back panel but then you can also get leather jackets that have panels in the back, out of these two the leather jacket would usually provide better protection as the leather provides a better resistance than material jackets, that is of course unless the material is specially treated.
When you are planning on buying equipment for your motorcycle you are best to go to a shop that specialises in that kind of equipment as you are more likely to be given advice on sizing and they are more probably going to have a wider selection for you to choose from.
