These are another variation on motorcycles but unlike sports motorcycles and such that are well known for their powerful engines and streamline fairings they are at the other end of the spectrum with small engines and fairly small frames.
Mopeds
Mopeds were the first to be developed and started out as bicycles with motors attached to the front wheel. They started out with a 98cc engine so were not powerful compared to motorcycles they were most popular in the 1950’s. Due to the engines being fairly small they can only go around 30 miles an hour at top speeds, some say to be classed as a moped they should also have pedals. They can’t be driven on the motorways because of the size of their engines and can be driven from the age of 16 whereas all other motor vehicles you have to be 17 this makes them very popular with young people. In order to ride a moped a lot of the similar rules apply to riding motorcycles you must have CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) and at least a provisional license if the license is not upgraded to a full license after two years then the person would have to have their provisional license renewed.
These have a different seat than any other kind of motorcycle as you don’t have to straddle any part of the engine as it is usually placed under the seat toward the rear of the vehicle. They aren’t as restricted as the mopeds in regards to the size of the engine, the size varies between 30cc and 250cc, and top speeds average out to be about 55 mph. It is only till fairly recently that the design of a scooters frame has been designed to aid the riders comfort providing them with padded seats and windscreens. It is now possible to buy high end scooters that have many extra features than the basic ones such as aluminium cast frames, engines with counter balancing, cross linked brake systems etc. They are most popular in European countries because of the fact they are such a cost efficient form of transport and fairly inexpensive to buy. You can drive a scooter with a provisional license so you need to be 17 at least, however, your age will restrict you on the size of engine you can have once you have your full drivers license you can drive anything including any scooter with an engine over 125cc.
Mopeds and scooters have been very popular with all age’s groups and are continually being developed to be faster and more cost effective. For more information either go online or ask your local dealer.
