As with any kind of vehicle it is thought best to carry out maintenance work regularly on your motorcycle this making it less likely that you will need any costly repairs when it comes to your motorcycle being serviced. Many people think that to carry out maintenance on your vehicles you have to have a great knowledge on the vehicle but that isn’t the case there are many checks you can carry out yourself even with a basic knowledge on the vehicle, some of the checks you can do yourself on your motorcycle are;
Tires – Checking your tires is one of the easiest things to do and yet tire blow outs are on of the most common problems people have when riding motorcycles. All you have to do is check around the whole tire for cracks, and cuts checking the tread as well if the tread has worn down a great deal you will need to get them replaced. As well as checking this you need to check the tire pressure as most blow outs in motorcycle tires are caused by low air pressure. You will be able to find out the exact pressure your tires should be at from your tire or bike manual, if the pressure is lower than it should be top up the air pressure accordingly.
Oil – You can see your oil levels from the oil gage on your bike so obviously when you check the levels if it is low then top it up making sure you use the correct oil. However, it is thought best you change the oil and oil filter every 2,000 miles at least, or every 1,000 if you want to keep your engine really clean. If you aren’t entirely sure what kind of filter your bike requires when changing it then you can simply take your old filter to a motorcycle garage or parts shop and they will be able to get that for you, some more specialist bikes may require parts to be imported so you could either get a garage to import that for you or alternatively order it your self online if you know the exact specifications. The manual for your motorcycle should inform you on how to change the oil and filter although if you have any doubts on the process you should get a professional to carry the work out for you.
Battery – Checking over your battery should be part of your basic maintenance and is fairly simple to do if you know what you are doing. All you need to do when checking over your battery is make sure the top is free of dirt and grime, check the cables for loose connections or damage and when it needs topping up make sure you are using deionised water or distilled water only, you would also have to make sure when doing this you are in a well ventilated area as the fumes can be harmful.
There are many more checks you can do to keep your motorcycle at its best you can find these either online or you can get basic maintenance tips from your garage. You should always make sure you are positive you know exactly what you are doing before carrying out any process if not you can arrange for your garage to carry out the basic maintenance for you.
